New Exhibit Explores Traverse City Psychiatrist’s Historic Research

This March, explore a fascinating piece of local history with a new exhibit from Traverse Area District Library’s Local History Collection. Featuring original documents from Traverse City State Hospital psychiatrist Dr. Paul H. Wilcox, the display examines mid-20th-century psychiatric research and his work with electroshock therapy.“Traverse City Psychiatrist Makes History: The “Shocking” Career of Dr. Paul H. HOUGHTON LAKE BLUES FESTIVAL

Experience two days of outstanding live blues music at the 9th Annual Houghton Lake Summer Blues Festival, taking place July 17–18, 2026, at the Houghton Lake Performing Arts Association.

Music begins Friday from 6–10 PM with performances by the Jabo Bihlman Band, Brendon Linsley, Just Magnetic, and a Blues Challenge Jam. The festival continues Saturday from 3–10 PM, featuring Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials, Jim McCarty and Mystery Train with special guest Carl Caballero, along with Tosha Owens, Weezil Malone, and the Jon Archambault Band.

This free event offers a full weekend of live entertainment in a great lakeside setting at 1625 W. Houghton Lake Drive (M-55). Hosted by the Houghton Lake Performing Arts Association, the festival brings together regional and nationally recognized blues artists for a high-energy summer tradition.

OUT OF THE DARKNESS COMMUNITY WALK

Supporters from all over Northern Michigan will take to the streets of Downtown Traverse City in September to walk for hope. The 2nd annual Traverse City Out of the Darkness Community Walk will take place Saturday, September 14th, at the Open Space in Traverse City. Online registrations are now open at afsp.org/traversecity

Online registrations are encouraged, and walkers will still be able to register on the day of the event starting at 9:00am. An Opening Ceremony will begin at 10:30am with the Walk beginning at 11:00am. Register, donate and learn more by visiting afsp.org/traversecity.
